Minor Coaching in the Minors
January 26th, 2008
Ryan Minor was a guest on my show, Minors and Majors, today. He was named yesterday to the Delmarva Shorebirds’ coaching staff, which means he’ll serve as a coach in the Baltimore Orioles’ minor-league system at the a-ball level.
Minor is best known for being the third-baseman who replaced Cal Ripken Jr. in the Orioles’ lineup to end Ripken’s consecutive games streak at 2,632 straight games. A two-sport star at Oklahoma, Minor also played major league ball in Montreal.
He had an intuitive thought, I thought, on what he can help to teach some of the youngsters he’ll try to help develop in A-Ball. Here is what Minor, a major leaguer turned minor-league coach, said.
“You might have to make a couple of outs early in the game just to know what a pitcher is trying to do to you later in the game, and you use that to your advantage because you know what he is trying to do to get you out, and you make the adjustment. People say it’s a game of adjustments, and those are right on. The ones that stick around the longest are the ones that make that adjustment. That’s where you get into trouble. When you start feeling sorry for yourself, and don’t realize that all you have to do is make a simple adjustment, and you’ll be right back in it.”
