The Bedard Deal is Official

February 8th, 2008

It’s official, Erik Bedard is a Seattle Mariner. The Orioles traded their top-pitcher and one of baseball’s best lefty’s to Seattle on Friday, netting five players in return.

The key ingredient in the five-player package the Orioles are getting back is 22-year-old center fielder Adam Jones. Jones is expected to be an everyday player in Baltimore’s outfield this season. He was a AAA all-star in each of the past two seasons, and it’s expected that he’ll develop into a gold-glove caliber center fielder in the major leagues.

Chris Tillman, a 19-year-old, is the deal’s second best prospect. Tillman’s a right-handed pitching prospect who was drafted in the 2nd-round in 2007. He pitched well in two minor-league stops this season, and was named Seattle’s minor league pitcher of the year.

Of the three other pitchers involved in the deal, LHP George Sherrill, RHP Kam Mickolio and LHP Tony Butler, Mickolio is the guy to watch. He instantly becomes one of Baltimore’s best relief-pitching prospects.

An 18th-round draftee back in 2006, Mickolio is now 23, and the intimidating 7th-inning arm stands an intimidating 6-foot, 9-inches tall. This past season he combined to go 6-4 with three saves and a 2.68 ERA in 32 appearances between AA West Tennessee and AAA Tacoma.
