Jim Zorn to Coach Redskins
February 9th, 2008
The craziest coaching search in NFL history ended on Saturday night, when the Washington Redskins named Jim Zorn their 27th head-coach. A Sunday afternoon press-conference will be held on Sunday afternoon at Redskins Park to introduce Zorn to the local media.
“I’ve always dreamed of being a head coach with a franchise rich in tradition like the Redskins,” Zorn said according to a team press-release sent out moments after the hire. “As a player who had to fight Redskins’ teams at RFK as well as at our home field, I know about the history of this franchise as well as the passion of it’s fans. I won’t let you down,” he added.
Zorn, who has spent the past seven years of his coaching career mentoring quarterbacks in Seattle, was hired as Washington’s offensive coordinator back on January 26th. In the month since Joe Gibbs resigned as the team’s Head Coach and President, a half-dozen potential hires were rumored to have been in the running to fill Washington’s coaching vacancy. Zorn wasn’t one of them.
The 53-year-old’s first task might be to find a replacement for himself. His promotion - which came without him ever having blown his whistle or called a play in Washington - does afterall leave the Redskins without an offensive coordinator.
The hiring marks the end of what has been a zany and chaotic search. Owner Daniel Snyder hired assistants before a head-coach, then was turned down by two young-coordinators participating in the Super Bowl, and then promoted one of the coordinator’s he had hired a couple of weeks previous. Wacky.
Lost amid the rejections and the hiring of assistants before the announcement of a coach was Washington’s misshandling of a couple of one-time runners for the job. Gregg Williams felt as though he got a raw deal before moving on to play in Jacksonville. Jim Fassel said that he felt “used” during the process, and Steve Mariuccii can’t be thrilled about today’s news after having been considered the latest front-runner as of Friday.
Snyder, though, feels like he and his staff accomplished what they set out to just over 30-days ago when the head-coaching gig became a vacancdy.
“We’re proud that our search was diligent, thorough, and resulted in today’s announcement,” said Snyder in the press release the Redskins sent out. “Jim’s track record and reputation as a player, great teacher, and as a coach makes us confident that they will translate to success for the Redskins.”
