White & Ackley on XM

May 7th, 2009

Minors and Majors will continue it’s 2009 MLB Draft preview this weekend, as I’ll be welcoming UNC standouts Alex White and Dustin Ackley to the show.

White is considered one of the draft’s top pitching prospects and Ackley is rated at the top of the board amongst all of the college hitters who will be taken this June.

White could go anywhere in the top ten, although I don’t see him sliding below the Atlanta Braves at No. 7. He and Kyle Gibson are the two most talked about college arms who aren’t named Stephen Strasburg. Expect White to be the second or third pitcher off the board. He’s not a candidate to do the Brady Quinn sit-and-wait.

I’ve heard whispers about Ackley (who hit his 14th home run of the season on Thursday night) going as high as No. 2 to the Seattle Mariners. I’d anticipate him going a few picks lower than that, but he shouldn’t fall out of the top-5. He doesn’t project to play first base in the big leagues (based on power), but he’ll play a smooth enough outfield that teams won’t mind grabbing his bat at the top of the draft.

Listen to my chat with the future uber-prospects this Saturday morning on MLB Home Plate (XM 175 & Sirius 210).
