Bird Ramblings

July 8th, 2009

The Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 12-4 in Seattle on Tuesday night.

Luke Scott is 3-for-4 with a home run, a pair of two-run singles, and seven RBI. Baltimore has gotten great work from it’s bullpen tonight, which came on in the third-inning after Jeremy Guthrie’s early exit.

…..

Luke Scott’s having a career year in the middle of the Oriole lineup. In fact, if next week’s All-Star Game was being played in an American League ballpark, Scott would more than likely be a participant. No designated hitter has posted more prolific totals than Baltimore’s 31-year-old has this season. Scott’s hitting .305 with 17 home runs and 50 RBI.

The 2009 season is only half over, yet Scott is only six round-trippers and 15 RBI away from tying his career marks in each of those two categories. He’s been the Orioles’ most feared slugger, and he may very well end up winning a Silver Slugger award. (He’d be the second straight Oriole to win the award at the DH position, as Aubrey Huff was the recipient in 2008).

Brian Matusz continued his Eastern League dominance with another dazzling start for the Bowie Baysox on Tuesday night.

The 2008 1st round pick (4th overall) worked eight masterful innings, tossing shutout uball while yileding just one hit and striking out 11. The brilliant outing was Matusz’s fourth consecutive since being called up to Double-A Bowie, where the southpaw-starter has given up just one run in his first 26.1 innings of work.

Jake Arrieta took another step towards being ready to make his major league debut when he pitched another solid game in the Triple-A International League on Tuesday night.

Arreita (2-2, 3.48) pitched into the seventh-inning, scattering seven hits and allowing four earned runs. The hard-throwing, right-hander struck out eight (that’s 28 punchouts in 31 triple-A innings) and walked just one.
