Goaltending Coach Dave Prior on Simeon Varlamov

So I get to my seat in the press box and start setting up shop. I look to my right and see Dave Prior, the Washington Capitals’ goal-tending coach. He was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time for a quick one-on-one. Here is what was discussed…

GP: Summarize Simeon Varlamov’s NHL work to this point?

Capitals’ Rookie Doesn’t Rattle

When Bruce Boudreau decided to start Simeon Varlamov in Game 2 of the Washington Capitals’ first-round playoff series with the New York Rangers, the second-year head coach hoped the rookie goalie would provide a spark.

It’s been a week since Boudreau put his team’s fate on the shoulders of a kid who isn’t old enough to get into a bar. The decision he made is still baffling, even several days later. Read the rest »

1st 7:44 Ryan Callahan goal (1) Naslund, Dubinsky - assists

Perfectly exectued 2-on-1 breakaway. Tom Poti was the only Washington defenseman back and when he made a move towards Naslund, Callahan recieved a perfect pass and one-timed it over Simeon Varlamov’s glove for a top-shelf goal. Read the rest »

FOR MOST OF ITS existence, the Verizon Center was filled to capacity on game nights when the Washington Wizards were in town. The arena was much quieter on days when the Capitals took to the ice.

Hockey in High Def

How did people watch sports before high definition? I’ve watched many games in HD before but I hadn’t had it in my current apartment until this past week. Wow. I know that HD does wonders for football and for baseball, but I that basketball and hockey benefit even more from the clearer picture.

I’m about to watch the Capitals game. Jose Theodore (21-10-3) is going to be tetween the pipes again tonight. He’s been tremendous since Christmas. No net-minder has a better winning percentage since December 23rd. The first-year Capital has registered a GA of under 2.4 since that date as well. He’s locked in. And with Alexander Ovechkin (who doesn’t have an HD friendly face) leading the NHL in goals, Washington’s been in business.

Fans Slap Ovechkin in Face

I will never profess to be a brilliant hockey mind. Better yet I will never act like I know any more than the average fan when it comes to the NHL. I didn’t grow up with as much passion for the sport as I had for other sports and I never played it growing up. I played soccer. I played basketball. I played baseball. I played football. I even swam for a bunch of years (until wearing speedos got awkward). But I never played hockey, and so I don’t know nearly as much about the sport.

Flyers Blank Caps, Pull Even in Series

April 13th, 2008

The Washington Capitals didn’t do a whole lot right on Sunday afternoon. Their power-play unit was scoreless in five chances, their top couple of lines played as individuals, and the team’s top-offensive defensemen turned a puck over in the neutral-zone that resulted in a Philadelphia Flyers goal.

When Sunday’s afternoon affair had ended, Philadelphia had evened the best-of-seven series at a game apiece with a lopsided 2-0 win. Read the rest »
