Birds Add Another Reliever
November 27th, 2006
Danys Baez is the newest member of the Baltimore Orioles. Go ahead and order his jersey and memorize his statistics, because it’s official. He’ll be calling Camden Yards home this coming season.
The 29-year-old reliever became the third reliever to sign with the Orioles this week. Southpaw’s Jamie Walker, lured away from Detroit, and John Parrish, re-signed after missing last season with an injury, both agreed to terms with the team earlier in the week. Read the rest »
Skins Spell Win With ‘D
November 27th, 2006
Joe Gibbs didn’t have enough game-balls to hand out after his Washington Redskins’ victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The shortage of game-balls has nothing to do with tight-end Chris Cooley handing one to a fan after he scored, or safety Sean Taylor launching the one he intercepted into the crowd in celebration as he reached the sideline. Read the rest »
Campbell must avoid the claws of Panthers
November 27th, 2006
JASON CAMPBELL’S first NFL test has come and gone. The good news is that the second-year quarterback passed his inaugural exam last weekend in a first-game loss at Tampa Bay. The bad news is that today’s test will be tougher.
Unlike a week ago, the Washington Redskins aren’t playing a bad football team today. Their opposition is a current division leader looking for its third consecutive win. The Carolina Panthers, one of six NFC teams with a winning record, were a game away from the Super Bowl last winter. Read the rest »
Turkey Day: A Great Day
November 24th, 2006
Is there a better day than Thanksgiving? I mean really.
I pose this question because I’m convinced that there isn’t another day quite like it. The only obligations a person has on Thanksgiving day are to eat and watch football. Eat until you can’t eat anymore, and watch football until your eyes cross. Read the rest »
For Campbell, So Far So Good
November 21st, 2006
Jason Campbell didn’t get a report card for his performance on Sunday afternoon in Tampa Bay. But if he did he wouldn’t have hurt his GPA, because he played well enough to win.
I have never been a teacher, but I did lead my English 101 class in a student-led discussion two weeks ago, so I feel like I have adequate enough experience to grade Cambell’s performance. If I was giving him a report card on his debut, here is how it would look. Read the rest »

College Game Lives Up To Hype
November 18th, 2006
Was I the only person who felt like today’s Michigan-Ohio State game got way too much hype? Look, I’m just as much about number-1 vs. number-2 in late November as the next guy, but I found ESPN’s pre-game coveraged over the past couple of weeks excessive.
I’m all about the production pieces aired on SportsCenter, which were put together by many of ESPN’s talented broadcasters throughout the week. I even got enjoyment out of The daily analysis of different aspects of the game each day. But counting down to the game on the bottom-line a week before kickoff was a bit much for me. Read the rest »
Birds Bolster Bullpen
November 16th, 2006
Jamie Walker is not officially a Baltimore Oriole yet. Assuming that he passes an upcoming physcial though he will be, at which time he will instantly become the team’s best reliever not named Chris Ray.
Walker, a 35-year-old, left-handed reliever with seven years of big league experience, has been a Detroit Tiger for each of the last five seasons. Walker hasn’t made fewer than 56 relief-appearances since way back in 1998, and the middle-reliever has appeared in at least 65 games three-times in the last four seasons. Read the rest »
For Campbell, The Future Is Now
November 16th, 2006
Jason Campbell doesn’t play for George Allen, but for the second-year quarterback, the future is now.
It took 27 games, but Campbell, a first-round pick of the Washington Redskins in April of 2005, will get his first NFL start this Sunday. He’ll replace 14-year veteran and three-time pro bowler Mark Brunell, who led Washington to its first playoff win in seven years last winter. Read the rest »
Orioles Make First Offseason Move
November 13th, 2006
The Baltimore Orioles have a way of being among the last teams to create offseason headlines. Apparently they weren’t in the mood to continue that trend this offseason though, as they made their first major move of the offseason on Sunday afternoon.
Don’t go too crazy though Birds fans, because they probably shouldn’t have. Read the rest »
