Forget about the National Football League. The acronym “NFL” now stands for the No Fun League.

It’s becoming a regularly used sports cliche. The adage currently ranks somewhere between “We’re going to have to play our A-game” and “We’re going to take it one game at a time.” But the over-usage of the not for long tag doesn’t make the phrasing any less accurate. Read the rest »

The Perfect Storm

November 12th, 2006

The weather wasn’t the only thing that was ugly at Linconl Finacial Field in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon. So too was the performance of the visiting Washington Redskins.

Washington’s 27-3 loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday couldn’t have been any more demoralizing. The team’s offense only mustered three-points and its defense yielded 365 yards and two scores of at-least 57-yards. Read the rest »

Somebody should tell the Washington Redskins defense that the season for giving hasn’t yet arrived. I say that because Washington’s defense, the third-worst in all the NFL, has done nothing but give this season. Yards, points, big plays. The Redskins have given up all three, and down so incessantly.

Washington Capitals

November 11th, 2006

How about them Capitals?

The young team is off to a solid start with 6-5-4 record - 16 points in 15 games. They’ll have to keep up that pace and then some to earn a playoff spot.

All Star ballots came out this week and Capitals Alex Ovechkin and Olie Kolzig are on the list. Find out more here.

A Redskins tradition gets revived

November 10th, 2006

THE WASHINGTON Redskins’ quarterback position is as insecure as a beaten puppy. The most popular Redskin every season seems to be the backup quarterback. Remember 1971? It’s OK, neither do I. But I do know that starter Billy Kilmer and future Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen were involved in a heated quarterback controversy. Each passer had a passionate fan base and every fan at RFK Stadium had a favorite.

Thirty-five years and dozens of quarterbacks later, Washington’s QB controversy hasn’t changed much. Fans are still clamoring for the younger guy, and this time all his resume includes is a season-plus of clipboard holding. (It should be noted though that he, second-year backup Jason Campbell, has held the clipboard nicely and he’s looked good doing it.) Read the rest »
