Winners Bound For Miami?

IT’S MID-JANUARY, but if you’re a football fan, the holiday season isn’t over just yet. We’ll be treated to one final Christmas gift this afternoon. It’s not an iPod or a laptop, but this afternoon’s two tantalizing divisional-round playoff games are about as good a gift as any. 

The early game showcases last year’s MVP; this year’s winner will be on display in today’s evening game. Both Seattle’s Shaun Alexander and San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson will need to have monster efforts if their teams are going to advance. Read the rest »

When the Baltimore Ravens host the Indianapolis Colts this afternoon, they’ll look to beat their conference-rival by being more physical. Baltimore’s Birds will look to over-power the Colts with a powerful attack. Power in their tackle-to-tackle running-game, power in their blitz packages, power in getting to quarterback Peyton Manning and slamming him ground-ward.

If the Colts, not Baltimore’s but Indy’s, are going to beat the Ravens - they’ll need to make enough plays with their speed. They’ll have to use their speed to stretch-the-field through the air, use their speed to establish a running-game on the edges. Defensively Indy will have to use its quickness to get to former league-MVP Steve McNair, a passer who Baltimore has done a swell job protecting of late. Today on my Major League Baseball show Minors and Majors, I was joined by sports broadcaster Dave Simms, Tomelo Mudhens’ assitant-GM Neil Neukam, and Oregon State catching prospect Mitch Canham. 

Simms was hired as the new television voice of the Seattle Mariners this week. A long-time play-by-play broadcaster, Simms is best known for his work calling both college and professional basketball and football games. We discussed his new job in Seattle, and how he plans on adjusting his style to better-suit the game of baseball. Simms also discussed the preparation that goes into calling games. Read the rest »
