Campbell’s Coming of Age

November 23rd, 2007

A loss is a loss, but last Sunday’s loss for the Washington Redskins wasn’t a total loss. Lost yet?

Sure, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Redskins, and with that victory and their more recent turkey-day triumph, took comfortable control of the NFC East. But even in a game when it dropped to .500 and slid down the playoff-rankings, Washington had least had something to be thankful for a few days before the holiday. Read the rest »

Happy Thanksgiving to you. I hope that like me, you’ll be spending your afternoon talking, eating, and hanging out with friends and family or both. Today is one of my favorite days of the year, and why shouldn’t it be. There’s nothing wrong with a day dedicated to eating and watching football with some of your favorite people on the planet.

I’m watching the Packers-Lions game right now, and like most of you probably, I’m marvelling at Brett Favre’s ability. The guy’s been around for a couple decades, and he’s closer to being 50-years-old than he is 30. But he’s still so good. He throws the best ball on a slant-route in the game, and Favre’s arm is still one of the strongest in football. And the way he runs around like a little kid after a big completion or touchdown reminds me of the excitement I play with in backyard-games. Read the rest »

Campbell Comes of Age in Dallas

November 19th, 2007

A loss is a loss, but yesterday’s loss for the Washington Redskins wasn’t a total loss. Lost yet?

Jason Campbell came of age at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas yesterday afternoon, when his Redskins dropped a divisional showdown 28-23 to the now 9-1 Dallas Cowboys. Read the rest »

Minors and Majors - November 17th

November 19th, 2007

This past Saturday on my nationally broadocasted baseball show, Minors and Majors, I was joined by three very opinionated and respected guests.

USA Today sports-writer and award-winning author Christine Brennan didn’t hesitate to tell me how she felt about Barry Bonds’ being indicted this week. She made a plethora of very powerful statements, but here were my two favorites. Read the rest »

PROFESSIONAL ath- letes are famous for using cliches when they speak. They don’t just use cliches, they are coached to believe them as well. In the same way that NFL players are taught to pick up a blitzing defender or to tackle a ball-carrier in the open field, they are programmed to believe that every game is its own entity.

It’s no wonder, then, that players are reluctant to declare a game a must-win affair. Most of the time when you ask an NFL player whether or not a game in November is a do-or-die match-up, you’ll probably be answered with a laugh. Read the rest »

THE LAST TIME the Washington Red- skins beat the Philadelphia Eagles twice in a season, George W. Bush was the president, the New England Patriots were a powerhouse and the price of a gallon of gas was more than $1.60. Sound familiar? It should: The occurrence took place just two seasons ago.

Back in 2005, the Redskins’ second season win over the Eagles–on the road in Week 17–clinched the team a playoff birth. Washington eventually advanced to within one win of an appearance in the NFC title game. Read the rest »

After finishing his first practice with the King George High School football team back in 2000, Jermon Bushrod couldn’t envision that the endless drilling and exhausting workouts would one day lead him to the NFL.

Today, he wears the black-and-gold No. 74 jersey of the New Orleans Saints. Though he has yet to take a regular-season snap, the 6-5, 315-pound tackle is only a play away from becoming a starter on the Saints’ offensive line. Read the rest »

You can call Brandon Lloyd a lot of things. Luck isn’t one of them.

The much-maligned, and extremely talented, Washington Redskins’ wide-receiver was placed on Injured Reserve on Thursday afternoon, just hours after he broke his collar-bone on the final play of a practice-session at Redskins Park. According to Redskins’ head-trainer Bubba Tyre, Lloyd landed awkwardly on his shoulder while make a diving catch in the endzone. It was originally stated that he would miss six-weeks. Minors & Majors - November 3rd

November 3rd, 2007

Today on my Minors and Majors, my nationally-broadcasted baseball show, I was joined by four very insightful and enlightening guests. The show was the first of several dozen offseason intstallments of Minors and Majors on MLB Home Plate XM 175.

Toldedo Mud Hens PR Director Jason Griffin joined me to discuss the contract offer for Alex Rodriguez’s services that he and the Mud Hen organization sent Scott Boras this week. The contract, which I was e-mailed a copy of on Friday morning, told Boras that Toledo would give A-Rod the $350 million he’s looking for if he was able to meet four goals set by the team. The New England Patriots have just put the finishing touches on the most impressive half-season in NFL history. The team’s week-eight dismantling (52-7) of a Washington Redskins team that entered the contest at 4-2, was symbolic of the team’s eight-week stretch to open the season.

New England hasn’t scored less than 34-points in any one game this season. The team has also managed to dent the scoreboard for at least 48-points in each of the past three weeks. There isn’t an offense in the league averaging close to the 41-points and 440 yards-a-game that the Patriots are. Read the rest »
