Unlikely Journey Culminates With Playoff Birth
December 31st, 2007
A Disney movie wouldn’t do the Washington Redskins’ 2007 season justice. In fact, if you wrote a script about the team’s improbable journey and handed it to a director in Hollywood, they’d laugh at you and hand in back.
A month ago the Redskins were left for dead, and maybe rightfully so. At 5-7 and coming off of a devastating loss to a mediocre-at-best Buffalo Bills team, Washington was just days removed from the funeral of pro-bowl safety Sean Taylor. Read the rest »
Run Portis Run
December 30th, 2007
The last time the Washington Redskins played the Dallas Cowboys, about six weeks ago, Clinton Portis was a non-factor. In fact, Portis had such a minute role in the game’s outcome that Hillary Clinton might as well have been in the team’s backfield. (And let’s face it, if she eludes tacklers as effectively as she dodges tough questions, she probably could have done the team some good.)
Portis, the NFC’s third-leading rusher, had only 12-carries and just 36 rushing-yards in that forgettable match-up in Dallas last month. A sixth-year tailback who compiled three 1,500-yard seasons before he was even 25-years-old, Portis is way too dangerous a back to post numbers like that. Read the rest »
Redskins, Vikings Mirror One Another
December 28th, 2007
HAVING MADE JUST two playoff appearances in the last 15 years, the Washington Redskins are about as familiar with meaningful December games as Miss South Carolina is with the issues surrounding our country’s map-literacy rate.
Sure, the Redskins made the playoffs in 2005 by reeling off five straight wins. And yes, Washington clinched a division title in 1999 with a critical December win in San Francisco. Read the rest »
Giant Killers: Washington Keeps Hope Alive
December 17th, 2007
The Washington Redskins are still alive in the NFC playoff-race, this after the team’s 22-10 win at the New York Giants on Sunday night.
Clinton Portis ran for 126-yards and a touchdown and Ladell Betts added a score of his own and a key first-down that iced the game in the closing minute-and-a-half, for a Redskins team that improved to 7-7 on the season. Read the rest »
Report hurts more than it helps
December 17th, 2007
MAJOR LEAGUE Baseball suffered the most painful day in its history on Thursday afternoon, when former Sen. George Mitchell released a report he’d been working on for nearly two years.
The report, which has been a topic of conversation in baseball circles for over a year, documented the rampant use of performance-enhancing drugs throughout baseball over the past two decades. Read the rest »
With Win, ‘Skins Can Let Out a Sigh
December 14th, 2007
NOT ALL VICTORIES are created equal, regardless of what professional coaches and players tell you. Take, for example, the Washington Redskins’ 24-16 win over the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
In the wake of four consecutive losses and the burial of friend and teammate Sean Taylor, and just days after the most crushing defeat of what has been a dismal 2007 campaign, the famished Redskins found a way to get a vital victory. Read the rest »

Erik Bedard Sweepstakes
December 5th, 2007
Erik Bedard is still a Baltimore Oriole. Truth be told, there’s a good chance that he’ll still be an Oriole when the team opens it’s season at Camden Yards in the last day of March. After all, the 28-year-old-lefty is the best starter Baltimore’s boasted since Mike Mussina became a Yankee and he’s still under contract with the O’s for two more years.
I think that the Orioles should do everything in their power to lock Bedard up for the long-haul. If that means giving him the type of contract that Mussina wanted before he fled, then they should do it. If I’m Andy MacPhail, I take a note from Cuba Gooding Jr. and show him the money.
