Georgia Southern smacked 14 long-balls on Saturday in a shellacking of Columbia. The long-ball outpoor propelled Georgia Southern to a 26-8 win.

As you’d probably expect, the power-surge set a new NCAA record for home-runs in a game. What you may not know though, is that the previous game-high for homers was 13, which was held by Alabama (who did the trick in 1999), and Cal State Fullerton (1996).

I’ve Never Had A Real Job

March 16th, 2008

So I’m sitting in the baseball studio at the XM Satellite Radio head-quarters in Washington, D.C. today. My show is about ten minutes from starting. I’m talking with my associate-producer Dion Simpkins, and one of the update-anchors on our channel Jay Brooks. I can’t even remember what we were talking about. I’m sure it wasn’t important.

But as I was sitting there - a few minutes before officially starting my “work day,” I was once again reminded about the fact that I’ve never actually worked a day in my life. Read the rest »

Price is Right

March 8th, 2008

David Price made his professional debut for the Tampa Bay Rays today. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native was the first pick in last June’s Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Price’s first big-league action came against the New York Yankees in the seventh-inning of an exhibition game on Saturday. He hit the first batter he faced. Price, a 6-6 lefty who led Division-I college baseball in strikeouts last season, then struck out the side in order. He left the mound to a standing ovation at Legends Field in Tampa, Florida. You don’t have to read comic books to know that every Batman needs a Robin. Michael Jordan, for example, had a right-hand-man in Scottie Pippen, and Roger Maris did his best work alongside Mickey Mantle.

Ryan Zimmerman may not have cared for the cape-crusader during his formative years, but he knows all about the successes of the afore-mentioned duos. Zimmerman, a 23-year-old third-baseman, has become the face of the Washington Nationals franchise. Read the rest »

DANIEL SNYDER must not have known what to do with himself Friday morning. It was Day One of the NFL’s free-agent signing period, which has become something of a holiday for Snyder since he bought the Washington Redskins in 1999, and he wasn’t celebrating it by courting players or opening his checkbook.

It’s hard to imagine him kicking back in one of the most comfortable chairs on his palatial estate. I’d assume he spent much of the day pacing, checking his phone for missed calls every few minutes. Read the rest »

Thursday Thoughts

Redskins -

I like how quiet the Redskins have been this week. Normally Dan Snyder has flown back and forth across the map three of four times by now courting free-agents. That hasn’t been the case this season. The only players Washington has inked in the six-days since the free-agency period began are Todd Collins and Shaun Suisham. Both were Redskins last year, and each was on the wrong end of an expiring contract. Read the rest »

Race for the Whitehouse

March 5th, 2008

The results are in from the four states that voted in Tuesday’s Presedential primaries, and on the Democratic side of the political-spectrum, Hillary Clinton won three-of-four states. The junior-Seantor from New York won in Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island, losing only in Vermont to Democratic front-runner Barack Obama.

Despite having lost three states on Tuesday though, Obama didn’t suffer any setback of substance in delegate count. He garnered more votes in most of Texas’ big cities, which helped him to net close to the same number of delegates out of Texas as Clinton received. In other words, while Obama may have lost the popular vote, his success in the state’s most populated areas should ensure that he won’t suffer a dramatic loss in the delgate count. Read the rest »
