Matt Wieters Still Raking
April 27th, 2008
Top Orioles’ prospect Matt Wieters hit a nother home run today. That gives him five in his first 20-games of A-ball. Wieters, a 21-year-old catcher who was the fifth-overall pick in last June’s draft, is hitting .383 with 15 RBI with the Frederick Keys. There might not be a better catching-prospect in baseball.
Everybody knows Wieters can hit, and his arm is well above average behind the plate as well (he pitched at Georgia Tech and threw in the mid-90’s). The only question he still has to answer is how quickly he’ll be able to develop the defensive range and skills behind the plate that catching in the majors requires.

NFL Draft: Mock 10
April 26th, 2008
1. Miami Dolphins: Jake Long
-OT from Michigan will be one of league’s best run blockers as a rookie
2. St. Louis Rams: Glenn Dorsey
-DT from LSU is a run-stuffing machine. The only thing that will stop him from becoming an all-pro is injuries. Read the rest »
Redskins Draft Day Report
April 26th, 2008
The Washington Redskins have a full slate of picks this year, nine of them in fact, which is more than they generally have in two or three drafts. The hope in Washington is that the Redskins can acquire at least a half-dozen players who will make their roster this season.
While quantity is certainly important for the Redskins this weekend, the team will also strive to obtain quality prospects. Ideally at least two members of the team’s draft class should be able to contribute as early as this coming September. Read the rest »
Wizards: Need Win in Game Three
April 24th, 2008
The Washington Wizards are down 0-2 in their first-round series with the Cleveland Cavaliers. That is the bad news for Eddie Jordan’s bunch. The good news is that the series is shifting back to Washington for the next two games, the first of which will be played at the Verizon Center tonight.
Washington needs to do a few things to get back in the win column. Firstly they have to play more under control, and play with more composure. The Wizards have lost their cool in each of the first couple games, which have both been physical enough to warrant double-technicals. (In game two Brendan Haywood was ejected for a hard foul on Lebron James). Read the rest »
Do ‘Skins deserve opening-night spot?
April 21st, 2008
FOR THE THIRD time in five years, the Washington Redskins will open their season with a nationally televised game–this time in East Rutherford, N.J., against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
The NFL does a lot right, maybe nothing better than season openers. The Thursday night kickoff, annually played in a major city each season and typically at the home stadium of the reigning Super Bowl champion, is terrific. More than a game, it’s a celebration, with concerts and performances going on for hours before kickoff.alberta credit counseling

Gilbert Arenas is White Hot
April 19th, 2008
Gilbert Arenas is putting on a show in the first-half of game-one of a first-round series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and his Washington Wizards.
Arenas, who missed 66 games with a knee injury this season, came off the bench late in the first-quarter. To this point, he’s four-for-four from behind the arc, having scored 14-points off the bench in guiding the Wizards to the early advantage. Read the rest »
Minors & Majors - April 19th
April 18th, 2008
My show, Minors and Majors, airs on XM Satellite Radio each Saturday morning. It’s a 2-hour baseball show, which focuses on the game at the major and minor league levels. One of the focal-points of the show each weekend is minor-league prospects, and tomorrow I’ll be joined by a couple of the top prospects in all of baseball.
The #1 ranked left-hander in the minors is Clayton Kershaw. He’ll join me to discuss his first three-starts of 2008, as well as his stay in big-league camp last month. Kershaw is the top prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor league sytem. The 20-year-old fire-baller was the 6th-overall pick in 2006. Most people think he’ll debut in Los Angeles by year’s end. Redskins: Schedule Released
April 17th, 2008
The game everybody will be talking about on the Washington Redskins’ 2008 schedule is the team’s season-opener. Washington will travel to New York to play the Giants as part of the NFL’s Thursday-night kickoff special on national television.
The fact that the Giants are opening the season hosting the Thursday-night opener doesn’t surprise me. They are the reigning champions. The fact tha the Redskins are playing them does surprise me. Joe Gibbs is gone and Jim Zorn, whom nobody outside of Seattle or Washington knows, is in. Read the rest »
Orioles: Loewen takes hill vs. White Sox
April 16th, 2008
Adam Loewen is getting the ball for the Baltimore Orioles tonight in a matchup of a couple of teams who have over-achieved so far in 2008.
The Baltimore Orioles (8-6) enter tonight’s contest against the upstart Chicago White Sox a half game out of first-place in the AL East. The White Sox (8-5), who like Baltimore were expected to finish near the bottom of their division are the front-runner in an American League Central that looks upside down right now (with Chicago and Kansas City up top, and Cleveland and Detroit at the bottom). Orioles: Prospect Update
April 15th, 2008
1. Matt Wieters, (C)
He’s hitting .478 and slugging .913 nine games into his A-ball debut with Hi-A Frederick. He’s also belted three-homers and driven in seven-runs while posting 11-hits in his first 23-at bats. My favorite Wieters stat right now though is that he has walked 10-times and struck out on just three occasions. Wieters will be 22 in May (and he’ll be in AA by then too), and his early season success is making a 2009 Major League arrival look all but assured. Read the rest »
