Top-5 Most Valuable Redskins of First Half

I had actually thought about listing a top-5 last week but I figured that I should wait until after week-eight. Had I have listed my top-5 before this weekend I think I would have put Fletcher at #2 and had Campbell at #3. But another week of turnover free football and a career-high passer rating in Detroit helped the strong-armed passer to slide into the top-two. Read the rest »

Redskins Flash Mojo in Motown

Clinton Portis posted another 100-yard game, Jason Campbell played another mistake free game, and the Washington Redskins got another win.

Portis rushed for 126-yards on 24-carries, bringing his season total to 944-yards through eight-games. That makes five consecutive games with at least 120-yards for Portis, who has rushed for 160 more yards than any other ball-carrier in the NFL. Read the rest »

I’m not talking politics here, I’m taking about Clinton Portis of the Washignton Redskins (5-2). Portis pocket’s straight. Or is it Portis pockets straight? I still don’t know which, or get it. But that doesn’t matter.

Portis rushed for 175-yards and a touchdown this past Sunday, leading the Redskins to a critical home-win over the Cleveland Browns. The monster game was Portis’ fourth-straight with at least 120-yards, the first time Portis has strung that many straight 120-yard games together since way back in 2003 with Denver. Read the rest »

Redskins Ink Alexander, Punt Brooks

Shaun Alexander has a new home in the NFL and Durant Brooks is now homeless. Alexander is a 31-year-old, eight-year NFL veteran. Brooks is the reigning Ray Guy Award winner for being the nation’s top college punter. His pro football career has spanned just just six-games, and his career in Washignton is - at least for the moment - over.

Alexander was added to help Washington survive the coming two weeks without backup running back Ladell Betts, who suffered a sprained knee in Sunday’s loss to the Rams. A former Seattle Seahawk and a one-time 19th-overall pick, Alexander is only three years removed from being named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player back in 2005. Read the rest »

Just a Thought: Torrence did not get burned

For some reason or another people keep saying that Leigh Torrence got burned. He didn’t. That has been the popular diction around D.C. today in describing the 43-yard bomb that Donnie Avery caught - in isolation coverage - with Torrence defending him late in the fourth-quarter of yesterday’s loss to the Rams.

Torrence was running a step behind Avery when Bulger threw up a prayer of a pass in the final seconds yesterday. Avery, who had the luxury of looking back for the pass while Torrence was looking right at the man he was trying to cover, came back toward the ball. There is no cornerback in the league who can defend an underthrown ball while trying to gain ground on a receiver a yard behind him. Read the rest »

Rams Stun Redskins

For five weeks the Washington Redskins didn’t turn the ball over. On Sunday they turned the ball over three-times. One of those turnovers — a fumble by offensive-guard Pete Kendall — was returned 75-yards for a touchdown by St. Louis Rams defensive back Oshiomogho Atogwe.

For the past four games, all wins, the Redskins haven’t dropped passes. On Sunday the team dropped five. For the past four weeks the Redskins haven’t hurt themselves with poorly-timed penalties (is there ever a good time for a penalty?). On Sunday it seemed like Washington was flagged every time it started moving the football with some semblance of consistency. Read the rest »

One Portis at a Time

Clinton Portis is one of my favorite athletes to interview and interact with. He’s always smiling and he rarely stays serious for more than a sentence or two. He’s one of the NFL’s most garralous and entertaining characters - and sometimes he is actually a character. Although the days of him dressing up in costumes seem to be behind him.

Wizards: Jamison Helped off the Floor

Atawn Jamison left the Wizards’ preseason opener against the Dallas Mavericks with an injury. The veteran forward was helped off the floor after his knee buckled in the first-quarter of Tuesday night’s exhibition game.

Jamison’s status hasn’t been updated since the game ended. The latest word from a Wizards official was that the all-star forward suffered a “strained right knee.” If a strain is all that is wrong with Jamison’s knee, Washington and it’s captain, should consider themselves lucky. Read the rest »

Redskins Keep on Rolling

Another Sunday has come and gone and another Washington Redskins (4-1) victory is in the books. Jason Campbell played turnover free football, for the fifth straight week to start the season, and Clinton Portis had his most prolific game of the season.

Washington fell behind 14-0 before coming back to score 23 unanswered points in a 23-17 division-win in Philadelphia. The Eagles dented the scoreboard by putting on a clinic during their first drive, marching down the field on 12-plays for 80-yards. DeSean Jackson then returned a punt for a 68-yard score moments later, giving the home team an early two-touchdown advantage. Read the rest »
